A presentation will be given by Dr. Dan Deckelbaum, a Canadian trauma surgeon who spent 2 weeks in Haiti performing surgeries round-the-clock at HAS immediately after the earthquake.

HAS

Hôpital Albert Schweitzer Haiti (HAS), located 40 miles north of Port-au-Prince, was able to withstand the devastating January 12 earthquake in Haiti and began treating victims within hours of the tragedy. Fully staffed with Haitian doctors and nurses, HAS is one of a handful of surgical specialty hospitals in Haiti. In two weeks following the earthquake, HAS treated more than 850 victims.  Most of these were major surgical procedures, with many amputations. Now that the urgency of traumatic injuries is abating, we face new challenges. Rehabilitation services and prosthetics are needed for those who have lost limbs and mobility.  HAS is also greeting a wave of displaced Haitians coming to our 610 square mile service area. Nearly 200,000 people have arrived. HAS’s resources will be pushed to the limit as we seek to provide care to the many new people in our district. HAS is grateful for support received at this critical time to help the hospital’s efforts to serve the people of Haiti.
